AZALEAS SUITABLE FOR HEDGES

Formal gardens are very much in fashion right now and the clipped box or lillypilly hedge is often a major component. Azaleas are a colourful alternative. Most azaleas are suitable for hedging, whether formal or informal, from the dwarf Gumpo varieties (30-45cm high) to the two metres plus Southern Indicas (for example, Alba Magnifica, Alphonse Anderson). Often, azaleas used as hedges are treated as foliage plants, where the plants are clipped regularly to promote fresh growth. However, if clipping (or tip pruning) is performed regularly up to the end of January, it will result in a very dense bush with normal Spring flowering. After the end of January, prune only to maintain appearance, such as cutting back any long water shoots which may appear.
